The employer contribution rates from April 2024 have been announced for three of our pension schemes – police, NHS and teachers. The contribution rate for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will be shared early in the new year.

From 1 April 2024 contribution rates will increase as follows:

  • The employer contribution rate to the Police Pension Scheme will increase from 30.2% to 38.7%.
  • The employer contribution rate to the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland) will increase from 20.9% to 22.5%.
  • The employer contribution rate to the Scottish Teachers’ Pension Scheme will increase from 23% to 26%.

Each scheme has a valuation report which outlines how the new contributions are required to meet to meet future pension liabilities. The increases are due to the UK Government's decision to reduce the discount rate used to calculate scheme funding needs.

The UK Government has committed to provide funding for public sector employers to cover contribution increases resulting from the discount rate change. For Scotland, this will be allocated through the Barnett formula.
